Gulika in Vedic Astrology and Its Effect on Us.

Gulika in Vedic Astrology and Its Effect on Us.

There is a mythological story associated with Gulika. During Treta Yug, at the time of birth of Indrajeet King of Lanka, Demon Ravana had ordered all planets to sit in the 11th house which is considered the most auspicious house. Afraid of Ravana all planets sat in 11th house but Shani (Saturn) moved to 12th house which is not so auspicious house. Angry with Shani, Ravana cut a portion of foot of Shani. That portion of Shani’s foot is said to be Gulika or Maandi.

Gulika is similar to Rahu and Ketu. It does not have mass and physical existence but makes a difference in natal chart. Gulika is generally considered the most malefic planet in the birth chart. Gulika enjoys the status of independent planet in Vedic Astrology. The literal meaning of Gulika is “Slow, Stupid, Loitering”. A person with the best of the telescope can never see Gulika in the Sky. To see Gulika one has to activate the Ajana chakra. One can see through Ajana Chaksu which is the third eye between the two physical eyes.

As per Maharshi Parashar, Gulika gives beneficial results in Upachya houses which are 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th house. In 10th house Gulika makes a native a Seer or a religious person, very good at penance or austerities.

Below effects of Gulika in various houses is only indicative. Please don’t get afraid just by reading the effects of Gulika in different houses. The effect of Gulika is to be balanced with the position of other planets in the birth chart. If Saturn conjoins Gulika in the Lagna [first house] the person would experience an intense limiting force in his or her life which is preventing him or her to progress in life. This effect is more pronounced during the Dasha of Shani.

Gulika in 3rd house makes the native short tempered, devoid of brothers and sisters. Gulika in 4th house prevents the native from getting basic formal education, unfortunate and poor. Gulika in 5th house makes the native fickle minded with an irritating disposition. Gulika in 6th house makes the native brave and a threat to his or her enemies.

Gulika and Raj Yogas

Surprised…? Yes, Gulika even bestows Raj Yogas. After reading so much negative about Gulika, let me explain the Raj Yogas it can confer. It will give the best of power and position, good wealth, happiness and prosperous life if the dispositor of Gulika is placed in Kendra or Trikon or it is exalted or in its Mool Trikon Rashi or in it’s friends house. But the innate nature of Gulika which is a Maraka remains. For example, for a Leo ascendant (with Leo sign in first house), Gulika placed in first house will bestow Raj Yoga, if Sun (lord of Leo) is placed in Kendra or Trikon which is 1st, 4th, 7th, 10th, 5th and 9th house.
